Hair Diary: My Love/Hate Relationship with Braid-out

braid-out

What is a braid-out? Braid-outs are braids that have been left overnight that are blandly taken out to achieve a curly/wavy hair pattern. Braid-outs are one of the most popular protective hairstyles because they are low maintenance. They are stylish, require minimum steps to achieve and can last up to 7 days. Women with all hair textures enjoy doing braid-outs.

Natural Hair Braid-out

Natural ladies enjoy braid-out because the result is different from their natural hair texture. Transitioning ladies gravitate towards this style because it blends their natural hair texture with the relaxed ends giving a uniform look. And relaxed/texlaxed women like them because its a different look as apposed to the normal bun which most women use as a protective hairstyle.

My Braid-out Journey

At the beginning of my hair journey, I did braid-out quite often. As my hair gets longer it gets more tricky. Recently, I did 10 braids all over my head (4 -front, 6-back) on air dried hair. The next day I gently took them down. The result was phenomenal, my hair was light, fluffy and well defined. I wore the style for 3 days. I moisture and sealed nightly and did the Pineapple Method at night time.

The 4th day of wearing the braid-out, I just threw my hair in a ponytail and didn’t detangle until my wash day which was on the 7th day of wearing that style. When I finally, detangled my hair. I experienced some breakage. I have realized that I should have detangled my hair prior to bunning. To minimize the breakage I detangled my hair in smaller sections followed by a moisture/protein rich conditioner.

To conclude, I love braid-outs because they are stylish and easy to do. On the other hand, if you neglect them they can tangle and cause damage. Learn from my mistake and detangle your braid-out prior to bunning.
